Brexit changes for importers

From the 1st of July 2021, further Brexit changes are coming into effect that importers will need to be aware of.

The most notable change being that importers will no longer be able to delay completing their customs declarations, as they have for the first 6 months of 2021.

Importers bringing or receiving goods from the EU will have to complete a customs import declaration.

Declarations will need to be made to either the Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) or the new Customs Declaration Service (CDS).

With freight-forwarders and customs agents currently struggling to keep up with demand for customs declarations since the start of the year, it will be interesting to see how they cope with the demand for even more declarations to  be completed.

Importers will also require a GB EORI number from the 1st July, which can be applied for here if they do not already have one:

There will also be changes to the UK tariff with importers urged to check the tariff numbers they import on against the UK tariff.
