HSE Latest Statistics

The HSE have recently released their latest statistics for workplace fatalities in 2019/2020.

Here at Eley Consultancy Ltd we always believe that these statistics provide a vital service in helping all UK businesses improve their health & safety.

So lets take a look at big statistic that will grab all the headlines:

  • 111 workers were killed in the workplace in 2019/2020

You might think that this is a relatively low number but 111 workers is still far too many in a year, which ever way you dress it up. The positive news is that the number of workers killed in the workplace is down from the 2018/2019 statistics where 147 workers were killed. So we are still seeing a steady decline in the number of workers being killed in the workplace year on year.

So which types of industries are these workers mostly being killed in currently? The top 4 industries that were responsible for a large number of these deaths were:

  • The Construction industry (40 deaths)
  • Agriculture, forestry and fishing industries (20 deaths)
  • Manufacturing industry (15 deaths)
  • Transport and storage industry (11 deaths)

And the top 4 causes of these deaths were:

  • Falls from height (29 deaths)
  • Struck by a moving vehicle (20 deaths)
  • Struck by a moving object (18 deaths)
  • Trapped by something collapsing / overturning (15 deaths)

Every year these statistics are published, you can almost guarantee that falls from height and being struck by a moving vehicle will be in the top 3 causes. There is genuinely no excuse these days and its vital that businesses take their health and safety seriously, to avoid any unnecessary deaths from occurring in their workplace in the future.
